Home // The Prostate – What every Man and Woman needs to Know Part 2 of 2
In our previous post, we discussed that the most precious gift you can give is knowledge because knowledge is power. We discussed the alarming prostate disease statistics and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, Prostatitis, and Prostatic Cancer. (It is estimated that benign prostate disease affects over 50% of American men by age 60 and 90% have symptoms by age 85, Prostatitis is the most common prostate condition and Prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among men. (If you include skin cancer). The majority of men in the U.S. will acquire prostate cancer if they live beyond the age of 65. (Dr. John Lee, MD)
We also discussed how to maintain a healthy and vital life through targeted nutrition – healthy levels of minerals, especially zinc, maintaining a healthy weight and eliminating inflammation.
Today’s post is probably one of the most important as it is meant to put men at ease so they can deal with their health from a calm, logical approach. It dispels the common myths, empowering you to make informed choices.
The 3 Myths of Prostate Conditions:
1) High PSA Means Prostate Cancer
a. “PSA is simply a normal component of the prostate. It is not specific for cancer.” Richard J. Ablin, PhD, developer of the PSA test
b. Stanford researchers say that “as a screen, the test indicates nothing more than the size of the prostate gland” Stanford University News, 2004
2) Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy(BPH) can become Prostate Cancer
a. BPH occurs primarily in the central zone of the prostate.
b. Prostate cancer occurs most commonly in the peripheral zone near the rectum
c. They share causes and risk factors but occur in different parts of the prostate
3) Testosterone causes Prostate Cancer
a. In the 1950’s researchers at the University of Chicago were implanting prostate cancer cells in the skin of lab rats. If they pre-treated the rat with testosterone, the implant was unsuccessful. If the cancer cells were implanted and allowed to “take” and then testosterone was added, the implants stopped growing
b. This was potent evidence that testosterone inhibits prostate cancer cell growth and development. The experiment was repeated with the same results at the University of Chicago in 1996. Umekita y, et al. Human prostate tumor growth in athyic mice; inhibition by androgens and stimulation by finasteride. Proc Nat’l Acad Sci U.S.A. 1996 Oct 15;93(21):11802-7
So there you have it, information to empower you. Treat the cause of your symptoms naturally using targeted nutrition. Your body is a powerful healing machine given the proper nutrients needed to do so. Treat your body like your car or truck by maintaining it and giving it the fuel it was designed for. You wouldn’t forgo maintenance on your vehicle or put sugar in your gas tank so treat your body likewise.
